When preparing to
be a vegetable gardener, you have the choice of going conventional
or organic.
No too terribly long ago, if people wanted food, they
had to plant it in suitable soil, till and harvest the
crop, and prepare for meals or preserve it for later
use. You can still do that today. You can choose to do
your vegetable gardening either conventionally or
organically.
Vegetable gardening is easy to do, and fun. More
rewarding is that your fresh picked home grown
vegetables are healthier, often tastier and less
expensive than the 'store bought' variety.
So, what is the difference between conventional
and organic? Conventional gardens rely on
fertilizers and herbicides to make plants grow. Studies
have shown that although 'conventional' may yield better
harvests, it could be dangerous to our health because of
the chemicals used.
Organic, on the other hand, lets nature take its
own course- only using sunlight and water to make the
vegetables grow. You will also be using organic seeds.
Make sure they have been certified by the National
Standard for Organic Agriculture.
In both cases, you'll need a spade, a mechanical tiller
or a rotary hoe.
If you have never done this before, partner with someone
who is experienced so you'll learn how to do soil
preparation more efficiently.
You have to choose the right location, make the ground
ready for planting and then water them everyday so
they'll grow.
Weeds and insects impede the growth of your crops.
Instead of spraying harmful chemicals, just remove them
by hand and let the ladybugs and praying mantises help
you. Although this is tedious, your crops will
be healthier to eat.
Do some research to find out what can ideally be planted
in your environment. Some vegetable plants may not
survive if the climate is too hot or cold.
More people are moving towards organic vegetable
gardening. You can try this out for yourself and be
proud of the work you have done with your own hands.
